Class 1

Class 1 has a bright and welcoming classroom with its own outside area which is shared with pre-school. Within the classroom there is a carpet area for whole class work, discussions, stories etc. and a quiet cosy area for children to read alone, with a friend or to a teddy.

We have a role play area for developing speaking, listening, drama and social skills and offering the chance to practice other skills such as paying with coins. This area changes regularly, for example we have a post office, a dark place and a travel agent. This area also gives us opportunities to act out stories with props and costumes.

In the building corner children can use various construction materials to meet challenges e.g. Can you build a tower a metre tall or a house for the three bears?

We have a writing table where children can go and work independently on stories, letters, lists etc. They have a variety of resources to choose from including word books and banks. We also have a big apple tree covered in apples with high frequency words on. The children can practice reading, writing and spelling these words whenever they like.

We like to use ICT to support all areas of the curriculum. We have an Interactive Whiteboard, and a CD player with headphones. We also make regular use of the school’s trolley of laptops.

There is a team of adults working in the class. The teachers are Mrs Lara Lambert and Mrs Louise Siddle. We have a number of fantastic Teaching Assistants – Dianne Harris, Jo Willetts, Penny Mathias, Sharon Dance and Fiona Harkin. Our parents are very supportive and several of them regularly come in to help in the classroom, come on trips or help in practical ways such as making books for our writing area.

Our outside area is a very valuable extension to our classroom, and we use it across the curriculum as often as we can. The school also has lovely grounds including a wildflower meadow, arboretum and pond.

Class 2

Class 2 is taught by Miss Claire Old. There are 3 teaching assistants who work with us: Mrs. Fiona Harkin, Mrs. Jo Jones and Mrs Michelle Herbert. Children in years 2 and 3 are in class 2.  It is a hard working, helpful, colourful, friendly and enjoyable classroom to work in.

We have different groups for core and non-core subjects, so we can support each other and encourage each other to work. We also work in pairs and other groupings to share ideas and help each other to improve our work.

We have an interactive whiteboard which is used by the children and teacher in most lessons.

We read frequently and have reading workshop groups which get us thinking about our books, reading as a group and giving opinions about what we have read.

Our work is planned through topics, this means that we learn about these topics in most of our lessons. (including ICT, drama, writing, history and geography). Our topic this term is Nocturnal Animals.

Class 3

Children in Years 4,  5 and 6 are in Class 3. Their teachers are Mrs Janice Peacock (The Headteacher) and Mrs Katie Clarke

The classroom is a pleasant room, with windows overlooking the playground, and two areas of carpet. We have an Interactive Whiteboard which is used in most lessons. The furniture is arranged in different ways to suit different groupings, subjects and topics.

We teach within a creative curriculum, making as many links between subjects as we can. Learning is topic based most of the time, and we use real and motivating start points when planning work.

We use the outside environment as much as possible. This might be anything from a day in the grounds, to a village walk or residential study visit further afield.

Over a two-year cycle our work is based on a range of topics: history (e.g. Tudors and Stuarts, Britain Since 1930, Castles), geography (Rivers, Africa, and Environmental Studies) and a range of English texts, any of which may form the centre for our learning. Drama, art and ICT are included in all our topics. Maths and science are taught separately, but where links can be usefully made, we seek them out!

PE has a central role in our Healthy School, and we expect all our Year 4, 5 and 6 children to take a full and active part in this area of the curriculum. We enter teams in many local school competitions in sports as diverse as football, hockey, cricket, netball, tag rugby, gymnastics and athletics.
